WATER SYSTEM OPERATOR

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Performs semi-skilled work operating the Authority’s water pumping stations, wells and distribution system, repairing service lines and maintaining hydrants, meters and valves; does related work as required. Performs essential work functions during inclement weather conditions. Work is performed under regular supervision.

TYPICAL TASKS:

Locates, tests, operates, maintains and records hydrants and valves;
Checks and maintains pump stations, wells and tank levels for proper pumping operation;
Ensures proper line pressure and water capacity;
Obtains water system data on residual, GPM, PSI, GPD pumped, percent of run time and related information;
Repairs service lines and associated equipment;
Operates Aquifer Storage and Recovery Well System;
Operates and maintains chlorination and chloramination facilities at wells and pump stations;
Maintains well houses; paints and repairs well houses and associated equipment;
Responds to water quality complaints;
Cuts grass; sprays for weeds;

Flushes lines; takes bacteria samples on new and existing lines;
Tests all cross connections for proper operations and makes repairs as needed;
Performs on-call response after hours and holidays on a rotating basis and responds to emergencies as needed;
Locates and reads water meters on assigned routes;
Responds to customer inquiries and re-reads meters;
Performs meter maintenance, tests small meters, repairs and raises meter boxes;
Uses FC 200/FC 300 handhelds to interrogate ERTs to ensure equipment is working properly;
Processes work orders and complaints; turns meters off and on;
Participates in the maintenance of positive customer relations.
Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of water pump station, distribution and well operating techniques, methods and practices; general knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a water system; general knowledge of the operation of hydrants, pumps, wells, power tools and hand tools; ability to detect flaws in the operation of equipment; ability to read water meters; ability to remove, maintain, and install meters and meter reading equipment; ability to operate and perform maintenance on Authority assets with necessary hand and power tools; ability to obtain a commercial driver’s license; ability to obtain SC LLR Environmental Certification Board licensure; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and keep records and make reports; ability to perform strenuous manual labor under all weather conditions in the field; ability to drive a vehicle daily; ability to lift 50 pounds, bend, reach, stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, ladders, twist, sit, kneel, crawl, squat and walk.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of SC Grade D Water Treatment or Water Distribution Certification, a valid SC driver’s license, ability to obtain a SC Cross Connection Tester Certificate within 1 year, and ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within 2 years.

THIS POSITION IS OPEN IN THE WATER DEPARTMENT. SALARY RANGE IS $28,267.20 - $58,780.80. DEADLINE OF RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS IS FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 2018.
