WATER SYSTEM OPERATOR
Assets
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs semi-skilled work operating the Authority’s water pumping stations, wells and distribution system, repairing service lines and maintaining hydrants, meters and valves; performs work locating, reading and installing water meters and appurtenances; does related work as required. Performs essential work functions during inclement weather conditions. Work is performed under regular supervision.
TYPICAL TASKS:
Locates tests, operates, repairs all distribution system fire hydrants, valves, meters, cross connections & troubleshoots any problems with efficiency as to find corrective action to meet all operational process goals;
Checks and maintains pump stations, wells and tank levels for proper pumping operation;
Ensures proper line pressure and water capacity;
Obtains water system data on residual, GPM, PSI, GPD pumped, percent of run time and related information;
Repairs service lines, fire hydrants, valves, and other associated equipment.
Locates, repairs, and raises water valves for all Horry county and SC DOT road projects throughout the service area;
Operates a handheld GPS unit to locate and correct hydrants, valves, and cross connections on the authority GIS system;
Maintains detailed electronic records of all distribution system assets including: fire hydrants, valves, and cross connections;
Performs fire flow test from engineering and customers throughout the service area;
Operates Aquifer Storage and Recovery Well System;
Operates and maintains chlorination and chlorination facilities at wells and pump stations;
Maintains well houses; paints and repairs well houses and associated equipment;
Responds to water quality complaints;
Cuts grass; sprays for weeds;
Flushes lines; takes bacteria samples on new and existing lines;
Tests all cross connections for proper operations and makes repairs as needed;
Responds to customer inquiries associated with valves, hydrants, cross connections, right of ways, and elevated storage tanks;
Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of water pump stations, distribution and well operating techniques, methods and practices; general knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a water system; general knowledge of the operation of hydrants, pumps, wells, power tools and hand tools; general knowledge of the proper operations of water meters and associated equipment to ensure reliable and accurate meter reading for billing; ability to think critically and solve problems; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public; ability to maintain positive customer relations; ability to detect flaws in the operation of equipment; ability to remove, maintain, and install meters and meter reading equipment; ability to operate and perform maintenance on Authority assets with necessary hand and power tools; ability to obtain SC LLR Environmental Certification Board licensure; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and keep records and make reports; ability to perform advanced arithmetic and basic computer operations; ability to read and interpret plans, as-builts, and GIS software; ability to work independently and effectively on a daily basis; ability to perform strenuous manual labor under all weather conditions in the field; ability to lift 50 pounds, bend, reach, stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, ladders, twist, sit, kneel, crawl, squat and walk; ability to drive a vehicle daily.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
A valid driver’s license according to state of residence.
CAREER PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES:
Title advancements and/or promotions to various positions depend on an individual’s job performance, knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience and other special requirements. There is no guarantee of career progression to these or any other positions at the Authority.
• Associate Water System Operator: $18.23+ per hour
• Water System Operator: $19.65+ per hour. Requires at least 2 years of experience as an Associate Water System Operator, a SC Class E Water Treatment License, a Cross Connection Control License and the ability to hold call.
• Senior Water System Operator: $21.62+ per hour. Requires at least 2 years of experience as a Water System Operator, a SC Class D Water Treatment License, a Cross Connection Control License and the ability to hold call.
