METER READER

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs semi-skilled work operating and maintaining the Authority’s meters and reading equipment. Does related work as required. Performs essential work functions during inclement weather conditions. Work is performed independently and under regular supervision.

TYPICAL TASKS:
Locates and reads water meters on assigned routes;
Responds to customer inquiries and re-reads meters;
Installs and replaces water meters;
Performs meter maintenance, tests small meters, repairs uppers on meter boxes;
Uses FC 200/FC 300 handhelds & Sensus Archer to interrogate ERTs/MXUs to ensure equipment is working properly;
Uses Sensus Archer and Command Link handheld to install MXUs;
Completes work orders as assigned;
Turns meters off and on (non-payment, transfers, terminates, etc.);
Performs a variety of skills and responsibilities involved in the maintenance, repair, service and installation of commercial and residential water meters;
Performs meter performance testing;
Uses MC 3 automated reading equipment to obtain monthly meter readings for billing;
Performs computer operation on NAA, NWA, NPA, Analytics and FCS software applications;
Performs on-call response after hours and on holidays on a rotating basis and responds to emergencies as needed;
Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of the operation of power tools and hand tools; general knowledge of the proper operations of water meters and associated equipment to ensure reliable and accurate meter reading for billing; general knowledge of all water department programs in the Assets, Zone Operations and Meter Reading subgroups; ability to think critically and solve problems; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public; ability to communicate while staying positive and respectful under stressful situations/difficult customers: ability to detect flaws in the operation of equipment; ability to remove, maintain, and install meters and meter reading equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and keep records and make reports; ability to understand and meet daily deadlines, ability to multitask and ability to perform advanced arithmetic and basic computer operations; ability to read and interpret plans, as-builts, and GIS software; ability to work independently and effectively on a daily basis; ability to perform strenuous manual labor under all weather conditions in the field; ability to lift 50 pounds, bend, reach, stand and sit for extended periods of time, climb stairs, ladders, twist, kneel, crawl, squat and walk; and ability to drive a vehicle daily.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
A valid driver’s license according to state of residence.

CAREER PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES:
Title advancements and/or promotions to various positions depend on an individual’s job performance, knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience and other special requirements. There is no guarantee of career progression to these or any other positions at the Authority.
• Senior Meter Reader: $19.65+ per hour
• Meter Crew Leader: $21.62+ per hour

THIS POSITION IS OPEN IN THE WATER DEPARTMENT. THE PAY RANGE FOR A METER READER IS $18.23 TO $26.43/HR. THIS POSITION WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL FILLED.
