WASTEWATER SYSTEM OPERATOR
Smoke Testing and Pump Repair Shop

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs specialized technical work in operation, inspection, maintenance, and monitoring of wastewater collection system manholes, gravity collection service lines, gravity collection main lines and other assets associated with the sewer collection system. Work is performed under regular supervision. Performs essential work functions during inclement weather conditions. Does all related work as required.

TYPICAL TASKS:
Works as a member of a crew smoke testing service lines, gravity mains, and other assets associated with the sewer collection system;
Troubleshoots and repairs residential grinder pumps;
Enters data for pump maintenance tracking and parts inventory;
Washes and cleans grinder pumps on a frequent basis;
Coordinates with vendors/suppliers to coordinate pickup and/or delivery of grinder pump parts;
Assists Wastewater Superintendent with identifying ROW maintenance needs for sewer mains;
Perform studies/work to reduce and/or stop inflow and infiltration (I&I) coming in to the collection system, including during rain events;
May operate trucks, smoke blowers, confined space equipment, fork lift, cranes, backhoe, hand tools, power tools, and mechanical equipment in connection with the above tasks;
Makes service line repairs on active sewer service lines coming from customers’ residences;
Makes external repairs on gravity collection manholes (ex. replaces rings, covers, repairs damaged cones);
Makes internal repairs on sewer manholes which requires confined space safety procedures to resolve issues (e.g. I&I, structural);
Performs landscaping on property after work is completed;
Assists customers in locating the source of smoke/odor in customers’ homes due to testing or when complaints are received;
Assesses manholes through inspections using industry standards and GSWSA programs;
Uses mobile device daily to obtain and complete work orders for work completed;
Participates in sewer restoration projects, grinder pump repairs, residential grinder station upgrades, closed circuit televising of gravity mains/services, repeat customer complaints and grinder training as needed;
Collects manhole GPS points to ensure map accuracy;
Performs on-call response after hours and on holidays on a rotating basis and responds to emergencies as needed;
Performs tasks related as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Intermediate knowledge of tools, materials, equipment and tasks involved in the operations and maintenance of a sanitary sewer collection system; ability to foresee potential problems and work efficiently to provide solutions; ability to perform basic and/or intermediate math functions; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions and communicate effectively both verbally and audibly; ability to lift 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; ability to move and traverse work sites on unpaved streets, uneven ground and in cluttered work areas; ability to perform strenuous manual labor in all weather and environmental conditions (ex. elevated noise levels, rain, sleet, snow, extreme temperatures); and ability to work and make visual observations day and night; ability to bend, reach, stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs and ladders, twist, sit, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, squat and walk; and ability to drive a vehicle daily.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or GED.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid Driver’s License according to State of residence.

CAREER PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES:
Title advancements and/or promotions to various positions depend on an individual’s job performance, knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience and other special requirements. There is no guarantee of career progression to these or any other positions at the Authority.
• Associate Wastewater System Operator – $18.23+ per hour
• Wastewater System Operator – $19.65+ per hour
• Senior Wastewater System Operator – $21.62+ per hour
• Wastewater Collections Crew Leader – $23.78+ per hour

THIS POSITION IS OPEN IN THE WASTEWATER COLLECTIONS DEPARTMENT. THE PAY RANGE FOR THE ASSOCIATE WASTEWATER SYSTEM OPERATOR POSITION IS $18.23 - $26.43 PER HOUR. DEADLINE OF RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS IS 5:00 PM, MONDAY, JUNE 9TH, 2025.
