WATER PLANT SUPERINTENDENT
Myrtle Beach SWTP
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs difficult technical and responsible administrative work overseeing the operation, maintenance and repair of a water treatment plant in a manner that promotes teamwork and a positive working environment; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. Works collaboratively with Water Plant Manager in achieving Authority objectives; Supervision is exercised over plant operators.
TYPICAL TASKS:
Directs and supervises the activities and operations of the plant, raw and on-site pump stations in the production and maintenance of safe and potable water for consumption in accord with all regulatory requirements;
Analyzes problems and/or potential problems of plant operations and initiates proper corrections as necessary;
Reviews operational data, lab results, SCADA and adjusts treatment as needed;
Conducts training of employees in the proper procedures and regulations as necessary and provides information and assistance to support operational staff;
Plans, directs, and coordinates plant tours, schedules for shift coverage, daily operational duties, and tasks to be completed by personnel as well as chemical deliveries;
Assists subordinates when necessary to ensure the production of a safe and potable water supply;
Ensures all machinery and equipment are operational and safe;
Ensures that all system, OSHA, EPA, DHEC and other necessary agencies’ policies, rules, procedures, regulations, etc., are implemented and followed as prescribed by the related program;
Prepares all management and regulatory reports for the water plant including waste disposal;
Manages chemical inventory for safe potable water;
Reviews and manages standard operating procedures for water treatment and employee safety protocols;
Assist with developing and managing capital and operating budgets;
Operates machinery and equipment as required to complete necessary operations of facilities such as a variety of motors and pumps, mixers, feed systems, meters, laboratory equipment, instrumentation panels;
Evaluates work performance of subordinates and conducts interviews for new hires;
Provides ongoing assistance/communication to distribution team to ensure water quality in system;
Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and equipment of water treatment, repair and maintenance; thorough knowledge of State and Federal requirements for water treatment; thorough knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a water treatment plant; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and safety precautions necessary; general knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; ability to effectively use and create spreadsheets; ability to delegate authority and to plan, lay out and supervise daily technical and maintenance operations; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to write plant O&M procedures; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, subordinates and the general public; ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds; ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; ability to work indoors and outdoors under all weather conditions; ability to climb ladders and ability to drive a vehicle daily.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and at least three years of experience operating a water treatment plant.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of Class A Water Treatment Plant Operator’s license issued by the State of South Carolina. Possession of a valid driver’s license according to state of residence.
